Chemical manipulation
Because blue orchids are highly sought after among both laymen and experienced hobbyists in the orchid world, this high demand means they are frequently abused by companies looking to make a quick buck. Indeed, it is possible to inject cheap orchids with chemicals and thereby (temporarily) alter the dna. But this is often accompanied by a temporary discoloration and a lot of damage to the plant as a result.
Injecting dyes into the orchid
Another method some companies use is to inject dyes into the flowers and discolor them that way. This can also damage the health of the orchid. And at the next bloom, it usually turns out to be a white orchid of mass production.
True cultivated blue flowers
For years we have always been looking for new hybrids from growers who have specialized in developing unusual colors of flowers in their orchids. Often the color achieved is just short of true blue, but very close to it, as in "coerulea" varieties. These look blue-purple-like. Since purple is a more common color in orchids.
Examples of genera with blue flowers
Some species that approach blue very well and that we can sometimes get hold of are, for example, some blue Vandas, Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas, Neostylis or Darwinaras.
The most blue orchids
The Vanda Blue Magic and the Darwinara Charm "Blue Moon" are then two that approach the color very closely. These are therefore extremely sought after for this reason. With the right climate conditions and the right amount of light, the blue color can become more intense. So often it is sport for a hobbyist to create the perfect conditions for such a beautiful species, so that these characteristics come out sublimely.
